5 ways to get started with fitness
When it comes to getting started in fitness, it’s easy to say you will go to the gym every day and eat clean. However, it normally doesn’t last if you try to drastically change your lifestyle overnight. That’s why today, we are going to give you 5 ways to gradually develop a healthier lifestyle that will be a lot easier to maintain.
- Up your water intake
Ensuring you drink at least 2L of water a day will be a good first step, as this will make sure you’re hydrated and energised. A lot of the time, when our energy or concentration drops it’s due to being dehydrated. So, start simple and just up your water intake.
- Start to gradually change your diet
Don’t try to switch from eating regular meals to plain salads, it isn’t maintainable! Instead, start small and begin to gradually incorporate healthier foods. It could be swapping out your breakfast, to begin with, and moving on to your snacks and dinner over a couple of weeks. This will make it easier to build as a habit.
- Build a fitness plan
If you want to start exercising, you need to know what type of exercise you plan to do. Consider what your fitness goals are and find an exercise to match, then plan what days you want to dedicate to exercising. For example, if your goal is to lose body fat – you may enjoy a more cardio-based workout like interval training on a treadmill.
- Start gradually and slowly
If you want this to become a lifestyle and not a quick fix, then you will have to have some patience. Making sudden changes will be more of a shock to your system, making them less likely to become habits. Instead, start slowly and get used to the difference before building it up. Try exercising twice a week and then after a few weeks, build that up to three.
- Allow your treats
Again, going cold turkey will make you more likely to binge unhealthy food! Instead, allow yourself treats and work the rest of the days around it. For example, if you always have a takeaway on a Friday night – just be sure to eat well for your other meals on Friday and that will reduce any feelings of guilt.
Going to the gym and changing your diet can be a lot at once, which is why we always recommend beginning with home workouts. It allows you to get used to working out and exercising in an environment that is comfortable for you. You don’t have to worry about other people in the gym or travelling back and forth.
